MSM has often been recommended as a safe and effective way to help with joint pain.
MSM has been used widely in human nutrition for many years. It has no known serious adverse affects on human or animal health. It has documented benefits for use by itself, taken orally. It is also commonly combined with other nutritional products, particularly glucosamine forms and chondroitin sulfate. One published study documented synergistic effects of taking MSM in combination with glucosamine sulfate (Usha PR, Naidu MUR. Randomised, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled study of oral glucosamine, methylsulfonylmethane and their combination in osteoarthritis. Clin Drug Invest 2004;24(6):353–63.).
For those with shellfish allergies, MSM can provide a non-allergenic alternative to marine-derived glucosamine products. Non-shellfish-derived glucosamine is commercially available, however.
MSM has often been recommended as a safe and effective way to help with joint pain. Other health products have recently-documented adverse health effects. MSM does not appear to have the highly-publicized adverse effects seen by long-term use of these other products.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDS”) are the most widely used and studied prescription drug methods for treating various types of osteoarthritis. Persons seeking information about NSAID benefits and health issues should review published information including (Newman, Lancet) and (Brooks) and (NIH or Arthritis Foundation).
